Trip Overview

• Destination: Antigua, Guatemala
• Dates: June 9 – June 16, 2025
• Objective:
  • Provide medical care to rural communities around Antigua.
  • Support underserved populations through primary healthcare services.
  • Offer hands-on experience for medical students from the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM).

Partner Organizations

• Volunca – A Guatemalan volunteer organization that facilitates medical mission groups.
• SOSEP (Secretariat of Social Works of the President's Wife) – A Guatemalan government agency focused on social programs for impoverished communities.

Accommodations & Logistics

• Housing: Hotel La Sin Ventura in Antigua, Guatemala.
• Meals:
  • Breakfast: Purchased individually by volunteers.
  • Lunch: Likely provided at the clinical site.
  • Dinner: Purchased individually at or near the hotel.
  • Estimated Meal Cost: $210 per person for the week.
• Transportation:
  • A rented school bus with a designated driver will transport the team throughout the mission.

Costs & Fees

• Trip Fee (Excluding Airfare): $1,000
• Payment Recipient: Dr. Thomas Shima
• Additional Expenses: Airfare, personal expenses, meals not provided at clinical sites.

Security & Medical Safety

• Security Measures: Security personnel will travel with the group.
• Post-Exposure Plan: A protocol is in place for needle-stick injuries, ensuring testing for both the patient and the affected individual.
• Heightened Risk Considerations: Potential inclement weather during travel.
